Busy Morning on the Ice

This morning there was a lot of activity on the ice a short distance from home. The Rock and Ice Ultra tent village has sprung up here for the start of the extreme race. There are four or five big Weather Haven tents and a circus tent which comprises the race HQ and comms centre.

Weather Havens are  Quanset insulated type structures and can be fixed up quite nicely. I prefer insulated walll tents when you get the choice but I have camped in tents much worse than Weather Havens. Looks like a small village there until the 23rd.

Over on the iceroad to Dettah the Snow mobile races were set up and they will be racing all of Saturday and Sunday. They have drag races, oval track on ice with dirt bikes and Ski-doo motorcross type races and there is usually some big prize money available.

CERTNWT is there handling the First Aid again.

The weather has been great for both events so far about minus 10 during the day with about 3 inches of fresh powder snow on the ground at first light. Just enough to give the Sk-doos some grip and not enough to hinder the extreme racers, in fact just right for those choosing cross-country skis over snow shoes or just plain old boots.

Lets hope the nice stuff hangs around until the races are over. Tomorrow they are talking +3 which is getting warm for all the events, snow starts to get heavy and sticky making it just that much tougher for those out there.

To all that are taking part in either of the events "Good Luck" with your race and to the volunteers that are making it all possible, a big Thank-You.

I manged to knock off another 16,500 steps on the Trans-Canada Trail virtual hike and can virtually visit Doug and Jean in North Vancouver as I'm passing by their home right now. Spring is great lets hope it keeps on coming. Greg
